Napoleon Bonaparte signs his abdication

On this day, April 4th, 1814 👑, Napoleon Bonaparte — the man who had conquered most of Europe — was forced to abdicate his throne for the first time. After a disastrous invasion of Russia and relentless pressure from allied armies closing in on Paris, even his own marshals turned against him ⚔️. He signed the abdication at Fontainebleau Palace, reportedly weeping as he dictated the words that ended his empire. He would famously escape exile, return to power for 100 days, and then be defeated at Waterloo — but this was the moment the legend began to crack 🇫🇷.
